Smart for climate, safe for people
Enabling climate mobility and safety in fragile landscapes.
The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat, it’s rewriting where and how people live. Across vulnerable regions, droughts, floods, and sea-level rise are forcing entire communities to move. The World Bank estimates that by 2050, up to 143 million people across Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America could be displaced if we don’t act now.
When climate stress combines with conflict, environmental degradation, and livelihood loss, migration becomes one of the few options -often involuntary. Without new aid models, displacement will become the norm rather than the exception, straining social systems, deepening inequality, and leaving millions without a place to call home.
The future we want
By 2050, communities once trapped by drought and insecurity have become resilient and move by choice, not by desperation. Early-warning systems and local foresight allow people to plan, not flee. Regenerated land, green corridors, and safe migration routes connect regions rather than divide them. Families move with dignity, governments plan with confidence, and ecosystems can recover. The result is a world where climate-related migration is informed and safe - not a humanitarian emergency.
Our solution: Smart for Climate, Safe for People
Smart for Climate, Safe for People connects climate adaptation, mobility, and governance, helping vulnerable communities build resilience while restoring the ecosystems they depend on.
A future where people and ecosystems thrive together - with safe movement, restored land, and lasting resilience and peace.
In Somalia and across the Sahel, CARE works with nomadic livestock farmers to map safe migration corridors, restore grazing areas, and help them use early warnings to plan safer movement. These efforts help communities anticipate shocks, reduce resource conflicts, and protect livelihoods -preventing displacement where possible and making movement safer when it’s not.
How we do it
CARE Denmark acts as a bridge between communities, science, and policy, ensuring that climate-smart mobility and green corridors become part of national and regional systems.
- Locally led action: Communities and local authorities co-design corridor management and early-warning systems that strengthen both safety and ownership.
- Government partnerships: CARE collaborates with ministries and regional authorities to integrate mobility planning and ecosystem management into climate strategies.
- Integrated solutions: Climate foresight, land restoration, and safe movement are connected to make fragile areas more resilient.
- Evidence to policy: We turn local experience into national plans and donor strategies that support early action and long-term resilience.
Each initiative strengthens safety, social cohesion, and the ability of local areas and landscapes to adapt and thrive.
